English Language Studies

About the Department of General Linguistics

The Department of General Linguistics places a high priority on the scientific heritage of the Prague Linguistic Circle at the same time as utilizing the most up-to-date technologies for understanding and using language in a global and networked context. As famous linguist Émile Benveniste asked, just what is the concrete object of General Linguistics? Various answers are offered in courses ranging from Phonetics to Computer Programming. Additional answers can be found in the semiotics course module, at the International Semiotics Institute, and at Semiosalong, the afterhours online semiotic salon. The semiotics component offers many opportunities for international cooperation and exchange with our partner institutions, including:

  • Tartu University, Department of Semiotics
  • Peirce Institute for Studies in Pragmaticism, Texas Tech University, Lubbock
  • International Society for Biosemiotic Studies
  • International Association for Cognitive Semiotics
  • International Association for Semiotic Studies
  • University of Bologna, Department of Communication Studies
  • University of Turin, Department of Communication Studies

Courses are available to Czech, international and exchange students (Erasmus+, CEEPUS, etc.) at all levels (BA, MA, PhD). Come ask us questions any time, at the department itself  (Křížkovského 14, 3rd floor), at the International Semiotics Institute (Křížkovského 12, room 1.04, 1st floor), or email the Head of the Department Ľudmila Lacková (ludmila.lackova@upol.cz) or the Director of the International Semiotics Institute, Tyler James Bennett (tylerjames.bennett@upol.cz).
